Psalm 23's Four Level Recovery Journey
Providing The Love, Hope and Support That Heals
Program Approach
Psalm 23 has taken a comprehensive holistic approach to helping those with addictions. The program begins with a pre-screening and intake process that is based on referrals (including self-referrals). The application process is stringent and students are challenged to stick to the program and the guidelines that are Christian based. The students then work through 3 levels of the program. There are options for further support after graduation as they progress towards changing their lives (level 4).
LEVEL 1 | STABILIZATION PHASE | 40 DAYS
Students first arrive to Psalm 23 with various issues. They arrive with a need to be in a shelter where they can get mentally and physically prepared to face their underlying issues in recovery. Psalm 23 provides that first step through stability. Psalm 23 provides various options for helping students with their detox, meals, hygiene and clothing. They will be introduced to Psalm 23’s counseling program, teachings of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and daily life skills activities when physically and mentally ready. This Stabilization Phase will help the student by getting them stabilized on their medications, getting them seen by doctors, mental health workers, and dentists. This phase also helps them with probation appointments (if applicable) and starting the process of getting ID for applications towards funding.
Addiction is a very powerful disease and as much as Psalm 23 tries to help them early in their recovery process, many will leave before or after detoxing believing they can do it on their own or they believe the lie of the enemy that they don’t have a problem or they can handle it themselves. Our hope is that God will use Psalm 23 to plant a seed. For those who break the bondage of denial/fear and are willing to buy in to the program schedule and requirements; will move into Level 2 | Foundation Phase.
LEVEL 2 | FOUNDATION PHASE | 90 DAYS
In this level, the students who have committed to the recovery process in the Stabilization Phase will start the journey of exploring many aspects of their lives towards a healing process in their lives. The students will build towards a Christian work ethic where they develop honesty and trust in themselves and the programs process. Students will participate in the daily recovery/psycho-educational programs, spiritual programs, work therapy programs, life skills program, vocation training programs and house chores. Students will also start a focused direction in their counseling sessions in the Foundation Phase.
Within the Foundation Phase the student breaks through denial, develops the ability to share and express feelings, cultivates a Christian spirituality that empowers the transformation of negative thought and behaviour patterns into positive self-esteem patterns for success. The students will build a deep knowledge into their core issues of abandonment and interpersonal shame issues and start the forgiveness process of healing!
LEVEL 3 | INTENSIVE RECOVERY PHASE | 120 DAYS
Students will enter the third level of treatment after graduating the Foundation Phase and will learn how to develop and manage personal areas surrounding communication and listening skills, abandonment core issues, relationship building, self-denial, internal/external defense mechanisms, self-awareness, interpersonal shame beliefs, healing from various forms of personal abuse, anger management, personal affirmation and dysfunctional family patterns. Other areas of participation include parenting classes, computer classes, budgeting classes, 12 step meetings, devotions, in house meetings, evening check-in sessions, Alpha course, Bible studies, church and the continuation of their one-to-one counseling. Development of the student’s life skills including: cooking, cleaning, home up-keep, work therapy and recreation activities are part of the student’s participation and commitment to the program along with developing within the Vocation Training Program. Completion of our Intensive Recovery Phase is the graduation component of Psalm 23’s Treatment Program. Students will also develop a relapse prevention plan in their last month of level 3 and begin their approach towards integration into a supportive and healthy community environment.
LEVEL 4 | MENTORSHIP TRAINING and/or COMMUNITY INTEGRATION HOUSING
Mentorship Training
Students will work closely with Founder/Executive Director Marvin Declare and the Care Team in their development with Psalm 23. Alumnus will keep a “Recovery/Spiritual self-care approach” first as they continue to develop their foundation and leadership in Psalm 23. Christ-like role modeling is a part of their participation and commitment as they will work towards their mentorship with new students taking responsibility towards being the example of God’s amazing transformation in a person’s life. Alumnus will be provided with independent housing in an apartment setting. As the mentorship program develops for the alumnus, some will feel the calling from God to work towards serving at a deeper level in Ministry. Psalm 23 does create these opportunities within its vision and many alumni have served on staff for Psalm 23. The option to move to the Living Sober Home is also available to those in the Mentorship Program.
Community Integration Housing
Alumnus can apply to live in Psalm 23’s Living Sober Home in Abbotsford, BC and can be supported in this home environment as long as they meet and maintain the simple guidelines and communication development aspect for their growth. In the Living Sober Home, alumnus pursue a school or a work track towards bridging off the welfare system. Alumnus will continue their personal/community relapse prevention plan with their counselor. As issues come up in the work force or their school studies, they work out any issues in a positive and supportive environment. The students take on more responsibility in the community and ministry outreach events. Alumnus will put their development of life skills to use as they work their budget planning and meal preparations. Psalm 23 offers an affordable rent so alumnus can build their financial foundation to prepare for the future. From this stage the students would bridge back into the community and their families.
